Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

We offer a wide selection of PhD courses under Computing and Engineering fields. These programmes involve an applicant being assigned to a supervisor for guidance in conducting the research. The applicant and supervisor/s work together to achieve the objectives of the research programme. If the applicant has no previous experience in conducting research, SLIIT will guide them through the proceedings with the existing panel of resource personnel. SLIIT will provide a foreign supervisor from its Honorary Professors Network to nurture and sustain internationally acclaimed research at SLIIT.

Eligibility Requirements

An applicant may fulfill the minimum eligibility requirements to be admitted to PhD Programme, if he/she has any one of the following qualifications:

  • A Master of Philosophy Degree from a recognized institution acceptable to the Senate (I.I)
  • A Bachelor’s Honours Degree or of Level 6(SLQF) with a minimum GPA of 3.7 on a scale of 0-4, and passing the qualifying examination after a minimum period of one year with required merit acceptable to the Senate (I.II)
  • Registered to follow an MPhil degree programme in a related area at SLIIT and passing the qualifying examination conducted by SLIIT after a minimum period of one year with required merit acceptable to the Senate to upgrade the registration to the Degree programme. (I.III)

Selection to the PhD programme

Selection to the programme is based on

- Academic performance
- The strength of the research proposal
- Research capabilities demonstrated
- The strength of recommendations
- The relevance of background and experience to proposed research work

The shortlisted applicants will be interviewed by SLIIT. At the interview, the overall suitability of the applicant to follow PhD programme is assessed.

Applicants seeking admission to the Degree programme under I.III, shall be admitted to the degree program on the approval of the Senate based on the recommendation of the Faculty.

Registration

  • An applicant under I.I and I.II, granted admission to the PhD program shall register as a PhD Research Student (PRS) within a period of three months from the date stipulated by SLIIT.
  • A Student, upon passing a qualifying examination after one year from the date of registration as a PRS, may be allowed to register as a Candidate of the PhD programme and to proceed with the programme.
  • A Student admitted under I.I, I.II, I.III and fails to satisfy requirements to proceed with PhD program at the qualifying exam but found to be suitable to proceed with MPhil programme; he/she may register as an MPhil candidate and continue studied for an MPhil degree.
  • The studentship of a PhD Research Student failing the qualifying examination twice will automatically be terminated.

Supervisors and Co-Supervisors

Applicants are advised to find suitable supervisor and co-supervisors before submitting the application. The supervisor of a PhD student should be a faculty member of SLIIT.  On request, SLIIT may be able provide some assistance to find supervisors.

Supervisors of PhD programs should be:

  • knowledgeable in the subject area to be covered in the research program,
  • Holding an Doctoral Degree or higher qualification, or a person of eminent research standing acceptable to SLIIT.

Duration : 5 Years Part time / 3 Year Full time

The minimum duration of the programme leading to the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) shall be:

  • Three years (or 36 months) for full-time students and
  • Five years (or 60 months) for part-time students

COURSE FEE

PhD Program is Rs. 900,000 plus tax. Application processing fees Rs. 1500/= has to be paid in the beginning of the registrations for PhD Programmes. Fees can be paid to the bank accounts of SLIIT at any branch.

All inclusive fee to cover lectures, tutorials, examinations, access to computer laboratory facilities and the library and is payable prior to the commencement of the programme.

The fee should be credited to Account No 1630552 of the Bank of Ceylon in favor of Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology, at the bank of Ceylon Colpetty branch located at first floor of BOC Merchant Tower building or at any branch of BOC. Or Sampath bank account number 003990000033 of the Sampath bank at any branch of Sampath bank. Course fees are subjected to change.

Pay in Three Installments

Full course fees paid will not be refunded. However, request for refund of fees may be considered if made before expire of one week from the date of commencement of lectures. From the date of commencement of lectures 90% of the paid amount will be refunded. If a request for a refund is received after one week but before the end of the month, 50% of the paid amount will be refunded. Thereafter, there will be no refunds of fees.
