Civil and Construction Engineering

Bachelor of Engineering (Civil and Construction Engineering) (Honours)

Location SLIIT
Study Method Full-time
Study Mode On-Campus
Intake February
Duration 4 Years

Civil engineers design and construct our infrastructure. They are key members of teams involved in the design and construction of buildings, bridges, roads, highways, harbours, dams, irrigation and water supplies, municipal infrastructure and other large projects.

As our built environment becomes increasingly complicated, ambitious construction projects can only be completed by teams of people with different skills, working together. The civil engineer is central to this process.

In this course you will develop scientific, mathematical and practical skills to solve engineering problems – first in the Engineering Foundation Year (EFY) and then by developing specific civil engineering attributes.

In your third year you’ll apply these skills in structural analysis and design, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, hydraulics, construction and professional practice.

In your final year, you’ll integrate your design, construction and management skills in large civil engineering projects and undertake a major research project. Project topics include structural integrity, construction materials science or pavement design, water quality, water systems, and construction management applications.

Civil engineers are in very high demand and this trend is expected to continue well into the future.

This professional and practical-orientated course is highly prized by graduates and respected by professional engineers.

Later in your career, you may choose to establish your own consultancy as an expert in your field. Civil and construction engineers have skills that are readily transferable between employers and they often find work internationally.

This course combines two disciplines – civil engineering and construction engineering – into one fully comprehensive course.

This qualification will equip you to be work-ready as soon as you graduate.

Upon graduation you may find employment with consulting engineers, large contractors, specialist subcontractors and government authorities who create and maintain a range of infrastructure.

Admission criteria may be different if you are studying this major as part of a double degree. Please contact the Admissions Office for more information.

You will also need to complete at least 12 weeks of work experience during the summer breaks in order to graduate from Civil and Construction Engineering.
