Mechanical Engineering Design (Intermediate Level Program)

Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is one of the major computer aided analytical method in numerical analysis. This intermediate level course introduces the finite element methods which develops the knowledge and hands on skills necessary to carry out strength and modal analysis problems for industrial machine design.

The Altair HyperWorks Package which is extensively used by many OEM’s around the world will be the main computer tool utilized in this course.

The participant can bring in their own industry problem to use as the course project.

  • Basics of Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
    • Introduction to static structural, modal and fatigue analysis and its applications, Introduction to other methods (CFD, thermal) of FEA and its applications. Introduction to software tools and its comparison.
  • Basics on Creation of Geometries and Import of Geometries
    • Introduction to types of geometries. How to create geometries in the FEA software itself. How to import geometries from CAD software. Introduction to methods of simplifying the geometries to have quality mesh.
  • Basics on Creating Mesh
    • Introduction to meshing methods separately for 1-d, 2-d and 3-d geometries. Detail introduction to element types for 1-d, 2-d and 3-d geometries. Special requirements of meshing methods for FEA. Checking the quality of the mesh and how to repair the mesh and improve the mesh quality.
  • Introduction Boundary Conditions and Material Properties
    • Introduction to the degrees of freedoms and the application of dof to boundary conditions. Introduction to use the materials from libraries and to create custom materials. Overview to change material properties. Introduction on applying different material properties to different parts separately.
  • Introduction to Solver Selection
    • Differentiate different solvers which can be used in FEA. Selection of best suitable solver for the application.
  • Introduction to Post-Processing
    • Basics of result file management. Introduction to postprocessor interface and to navigate it. Overview of having required results from the post-processor.
  • Practice FEA for Real Applications
    • Introduction FEA to real applications (final project).
