With the objective of uplifting the quality of life of underprivileged children in Sri Lanka, the Student Interactive Society of SLIIT, under the theme a?Walk for their Futurea organized a five kilometre walk to raise funds for the Christ Church College in Baddegama.
More than 1000 students, faculty and administrative staff from SLIIT rallied together to collect funds to build and equip a media and computer lab for the students at Christ Church College.
Commenting on the project, Achala Illangakoon, President Student Interactive Society at SLIIT noted, a?Seeing the necessity for a computer lab and the interest shown by the school, we decided to dedicate the walk for the students of Christ Church College. We provided 22 computers and painted the lab. We were also able to build a separate room for multimedia and equip it with a projector and computer. The SLIIT walk 2015, was successfully completed as a result of the unwavering support given by Prof. Lalith Gamage-President and CEO SLIIT. We are also truly grateful to everyone who participated in the walka?.
a?We offer education to students from grade one up until the Advanced Level examination. Currently in the Advanced level stream we have 150 students studying Information and Communication Technology (ICT) but sadly, we have only a few computers. Our students show a lot of enthusiasm and dedication in this field. However, due to the lack of resources we are unable to provide our ICT students with practical skills. I really appreciate the efforts taken by SLIIT to organize a walk solely to collect funds for our computer lab. It is assuring to know that we can provide our students with more resources, practical skills and knowledgea? commented H.W. Dayawansa, Principal Christ Church College.
a?At SLIIT, we teach students not only to focus on academics, but also to spend their time to volunteer at charity projects, develop soft skills and participate in various sporting activities. Our aim is to mould students into well rounded citizens who understand the importance of not only a successful career but also the significance of being caring and helpful towards society. I wish to also commend the Student Interactive Society for organizing the SLIIT walk to raise sufficient amount of funds to support rural school childrena? commented Prof. Lalith Gamage-President and CEO SLIIT.
The funds collected at the SLIIT Walk in 2014, were used to uplift the Sri Sahashthra Lankara Vidyalaya in Balangoda.
