The ‘Human Rights Day Program’ organized by the School of Law, Faculty of Humanities and Sciences was held on the 13th of December 2018 at the Main Auditorium, Malabe Campus. The event was organized to mark the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) with the aim of raising awareness and cultivating an appreciation of human rights in SLIIT’s students. The program consisted of a guest lecture and an on-the-spot poster competition for the students in the audience.
The guest lecture, on the topic ‘Human Rights and Human Development: Significance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights’, was delivered by Dr. Dinesha Samararatne, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Law, University of Colombo. In her guest lecture, Dr. Samararatne stressed the importance and the applicability of the UDHR to all human beings because of their human status, and how human rights are interwoven with modern conceptions of human development. Students participated in the poster competition with much enthusiasm, and produced attractive posters that creatively expressed their thoughts on human rights.
