Dr. Gobithas Tharmarajah
Senior Lecturer (HG) & Executive Director/Value Engineering Cell
Faculty of Engineering | Civil Engineering
Career Summary
Gobithas Tharmarajah is an engineer by training and an academic by profession. After completing his first degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka in 2007, he completed his doctoral studies in the area of Structural Engineering at the Queen's University Belfast, United Kingdom in 2011. His doctoral study was on the application of FRP bars in in-plane restrained slabs. This research and other previous studies on in-plane restrained slabs have facilitated construction of the first BFRP reinforced bridge decks in the UK.
He then joined Athlon Institute of Technolgy in the Republic of Ireland to work on a project that focused on optimizing underground service chambers. At the completion of this project, he returned to Sri Lanka in 2013 and joined SLIIT as a Senior Lecturer (Higher Grade) in the Department of Civil Engineering. He currently holds the same position at SLIIT and engaged in teaching and research in the area of structural engineering. His research interests and teaching interests are listed below.
Research Interests
- Application of natural, steel and plastic fibres in advanced concrete such as Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC)
- Application of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) reinforcement in civil infrastructure to enhance sustainability
- Nonlinear analysis of Composite Structures
- Modular Structures
- Non-Destructive Evaluation of Concrete Structures for Corrosion
Teaching Interests
- Structural Analysis
- Structural Design
- Engineering Mechanics
