Career Summary

Rohana Thilakumara started carrier as a temporary instructor at the Department of Electronic & Telecommunication Engineering, University of Moratuwa, in July 1994, subsequent to his graduation as an Electronic & Telecommunication Engineer in May 1994 with First Class Honours and the Ceylon Electricity Board Award for the Best Electrical/Electronic Engineering graduate. Later he joined the permanent academic staff of the same department in July 1995. He was admitted to the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Bristol, U.K. in 1997 to follow a research MSc in Integrated Optics funded by a DTI Case Award which was later upgraded to a PhD in Optical Communications, funded by Overseas Research Scholarship (ORS) Award and University of Bristol, Convocation Scholarship. Upon graduation with the PhD award in October 2001 from Bristol University, he joined the Department of Electronic & Telecommunication Engineering, University of Moratuwa Sri Lanka as a Senior Lecturer. During his tenure at University of Moratuwa, he took up nonacademic responsibilities and served in various committees. He was the Coordinator of the PG Diploma in Electronic & Telecommunication for the period 2002-2006 and served in the Engineering Faculty Academic Committee, Field Selection Committee and Examination Offense Committees. Completing 5 years of service at University of Moratuwa he joined the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, U.K. on sabbatical leave as a visiting Fellow at the Centre for Advanced Photonics and Electronics (CAPE) in April 2007 where he researched in polymer integrated optics cross connects. After a 12 month tenure at Cambridge, he joined the Intel Corporation U.K. Ltd in London, as a Signal Processing Systems Arch in July 2008, where he was involved in development of Digital Signal Processing algorithms for Digital Television Receiver design where DVB-T2 algorithm design and Universal TV receiver design projects that included all the TV standards in the world. Completing three year tenure at Intel, he joined Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) as a senior lecturer in August 2011 and subsequently became the Head of Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Currently he is serving as a senior lecturer at the faculty of Engineering of SLIIT
