CAREER SUMMARY
Dr. Iresha Ratnayake is an Assistant Professor in the School of Education at the Faculty of Humanities and Sciences at the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT), Sri Lanka. She is a mathematics educator and researcher with more than 20 years of experience in secondary and tertiary education, teacher education, curriculum development, and international research collaboration. Her academic and professional work spans Sri Lanka, Sweden, South Africa, Germany, and New Zealand, reflecting extensive engagement in both local and global educational contexts.
Her expertise lies in mathematics education, teacher professional development, curriculum studies, digital technologies in mathematics teaching and learning, geometry education, and implementation research. She has contributed significantly to the development of mathematics curricula, teacher instructional materials, and professional development programmes for teachers and teacher educators. During her tenure at the National Institute of Education, Sri Lanka, she was involved in designing curriculum materials and conducting large-scale professional development programmes for mathematics teachers and teacher trainers from Grades 6 to 13.
Dr. Ratnayake has held research and academic positions at several internationally recognised institutions, including the Department of Education at Uppsala University, Sweden; the Wits School of Education at University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Afroca; Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany and the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Her postdoctoral and research work has focused on implementation research in mathematics didactics, geometry teaching, blended professional learning for teachers, teacher professional development, use of mathematical language, bilingual mathematics education, and the integration of digital technologies such as GeoGebra and learning videos in mathematics classrooms.
In addition to her teaching and research responsibilities, she currently serves as a Visiting Lecturer at the Postgraduate Institute of Science, University of Peradeniya, a PhD upgrading examiner at the University of Colombo, and a member of the Science Popularising Committee of the National Science Foundation. She also supervises doctoral research in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Colombo. Recently, she served as the Lead Resource Person for a UNESCO-supported project on developing a National Continuous Professional Development (CPD) framework for teachers, teacher advisers and teacher educators in Sri Lanka.
Dr. Ratnayake has presented her research at numerous international conferences and actively collaborates with researchers and institutions across Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Her work continues to focus on improving mathematics teaching and teacher education through research-informed, context-responsive, and innovative educational practices.
