CAREER SUMMARY

Ms. Uthpala Samarakoon is a Senior Lecturer in Information Technology at the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology, Malabe, Sri Lanka. She currently serves as the Accreditation Coordinator for the Faculty of Computing, where she leads accreditation and quality assurance activities, ensuring alignment with international standards such as those of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

She joined SLIIT in 2006 as an instructor and has progressed through several academic positions, demonstrating a strong commitment to teaching, academic leadership, and institutional development. In 2016, she also served as the Accreditation Liaison for the Faculty of Computing, contributing to key accreditation initiatives.

Ms. Samarakoon holds an MPhil in Information Technology from the University of Colombo School of Computing, completed in 2023. Her research interests include e-learning, human–computer interaction (HCI), IT education, social science applications in computing, and knowledge management, with a focus on user-centred design and technology-enhanced learning.

With over 17 years of experience in undergraduate teaching, she is actively involved in curriculum development, student supervision, and research, contributing to continuous programme improvement and academic excellence.

ONGOING RESEARCH

Ms. Uthpala Samarakoon is actively engaged in research in the areas of technology-enhanced education and computing education. Her primary work focuses on designing and validating a Process–Product Assessment Framework (PPAF-AI) to evaluate human–AI learning interactions and meaningful learning in higher education. She is also involved in a systematic literature review examining the evolution of ICT graduate employability skills (2005–2024), highlighting the shift from technical expertise to cognitive, human-centric, and adaptive competencies required by industry. In addition, she contributes to applied research through supervision in areas such as cloud computing adoption and avoidance among SMEs in Sri Lanka, focusing on factors influencing digital transformation decisions. Building on this work, she plans to expand her research through collaborative and interdisciplinary initiatives in AI-integrated education, human–AI interaction, and innovative assessment design, aiming to develop scalable and practical solutions for contemporary educational challenges.
