FHS Supports Flood-Affected School Through CSR Initiative

Donation of laboratory resources and IT equipment to Roman Catholic School, Hanwella restores science education after cyclone damage

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, the Faculty of Humanities and Sciences (FHS) conducted a donation programme for Roman Catholic School, Hanwella, on 23rd April 2026. The initiative aimed to support the school’s science laboratory, which was severely damaged during the cyclone-related floods last December, where floodwater rose to nearly five feet, damaging most laboratory equipment and chemicals.

In response to a request received through a parent of a student in Grade 3 currently enrolled in a PGDE programme, FHS donated science laboratory chemicals and a desktop computer to support the restoration of the science lab and facilitate uninterrupted science education for students.
The CSR activity was successfully carried out through staff donations from FHS, with the support of SLIIT. The event was attended by Pro-Vice Chancellor – FHS, Dr. Malitha Wijesundara; Associate Dean, Prof. Charitha Jayaruk; Head of Department – Applied Sciences, Prof. Dhanushka Udayanga; and Manager – FHS, Mr. Kaushalya De Silva, along with other FHS staff members.

This initiative reflects FHS’s continued commitment to supporting Science Education and contributing to the recovery and development of communities affected by natural disasters.
