The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering is the oldest department of Faculty of Engineering of SLIIT, founded in 2009. The department is dedicated to produce technically capable engineers who have essential skills needed to drive the industry to new dimensions. The department and its staff are committed to engage in state of the art research and collaborate closely with the industry partners to strengthen the industry with skills, technology and research.

To create Electrical and Electronic engineers enriched with advanced technological experience, strong analytical, problem solving and communication skills, and essential skills, who are most sorted after by the industry, satisfying the expectations of the industry, and one who will lead the industry to heights beyond the current levels

Laboratories and Equipments

F1001 – Electrical Power Systems laboratory contains devices and equipment required mainly to conduct power systems related lab experiments. It contains of a LabVolt transmission line module where students can study power transmission line characteristics, a power systems model developed inhouse under the supervision of Professor Sam Karunarathne, which can be used to study the behaviour of short, medium and long-distance transmission lines and the wind trainer apparatus to emulate wind energy related experiments. In addition, two conveyer setups are also housed in this laboratory that is used to give industrial like experience in automation.

F1002 - Communication Laboratory houses four state of the art EMONA TIMS communications laboratory set ups. All set ups are equipped with all the pluggable experiment cards come in the package. HAMEG HMF2525 arbitrary function generator, Agilent DSO-X 2022A, 200 MHz DSOs, GwInstek GSP830 3 GHz spectrum analyser are among the other equipment available in the laboratory to support communication engineering experiments. This well-equipped laboratory ensures that, students are experiencing the best of the practical electronic communication methods in this laboratory.

F1003 - Digital Electronics Laboratory is the main laboratory used to conduct Digital Electronic and Digital Design lab experiments including the first year module. This lab is equipped with 16 workstations, each consisting of an Agilent DSO1052 50 MHz digital storage oscilloscope, a GwInstek SFG1013 function generator, a Tenma 72-1016 True RMS bench multimeter and a variable dual DC power supply. A sufficient stock of fundamental digital electronic components is made available throughout the year to cater the requirements of student lab classes as well as basic requirements for projects. In order to carry out digital design laboratories, Altera DE2-70 and Altera DE0 development boards and CPLDs are made available in sufficient capacities.

F1004 - Analogue Electronics Laboratory is the main laboratory used to conduct Analogue Electronic lab experiments. This lab is equipped with 16 workstations, each consisting of a Yokogawa AL510 50 MHz analogue oscilloscope, a GwInstek SFG2110 function generator, a Tenma 72-1016 True RMS bench multimeter and a variable dual DC power supply. Clip-on multimeters with true rms measurements and hand-held multimeters are among the other equipment available in this laboratory. A sufficient stock of fundamental electronic components is made available throughout the year for catering the requirements of student lab classes as well as basic requirements for projects.

F1005 - Embedded Design Laboratory is equipped with 16 workstations, each consisting of a Keysight DSO1052B 50 MHz digital storage oscilloscope, an Agelent 33500B function generator, a Keysight U1231A True RMS multimeter and a variable dual DC power supply together with a range of devices used for embedded systems development. TI Launchpad development boards equipped with MSP430 processor, PIC microcontroller development boards, PROM programmers, Keil NXP LPC 1760 development tools, Advanced universal programmer and Raspberry Pi boards are among the devices available.

F1007 – D.I.Y. Laboratory provides space for student projects. Equipment required for electronic developments, such as soldering stations are made available with sufficient space for the students to work on their design projects, assignment work and hobby projects.

F1009 - Networking Laboratory is equipped with 20 Windows based computers that can be used to configure the network gear that includes 3 Cisco 1900 routers, 2 24-port HP switches and 2 Cisco wireless access points. This setup enables students to lively observe the behaviour of real-time network configuration activities. Tools and accessories are available for network cabling through which the students get hands on experience in cable connecting. All machines are equipped with Packet Traces software that is used to model and test traffic in a variety of computer networks.

F1010 - Machines and Power Electronics Laboratory contains a range of electrical machines (LabVolt, Texas Instruments), with associated instrumentation, and variable speed drives. LabVolt 8007 and TI high voltage DC motor kits facilitating a number of different types of experiments which include v/f control of induction motors, field orientation control of AC motors, DC drives and control implementation, characterisation of motors, characterisation of synchronous machines are available in this lab.

Welcome to the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at SLIIT!

SLIIT's Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering is a thriving hub for innovation, skill development, and acquiring new knowledge. We are proud to have the most dynamic faculty and the best-prepared, multifaceted students, all of whom are highly motivated and committed to constant growth and development. Our programmes are designed to help students develop the interdisciplinary problem-solving abilities, social savvy, and self-assurance necessary to become successful engineers. Electrical and electronic engineers are in high demand due to the expanding fields of automation, electronic communication, the "internet of things," and renewable and sustainable energy.

We have extensive connections to both government and private industry, which allows us to undertake and complete important initiatives and studies. Many of our alumni are now working for prominent domestic and international corporations, making our name shine and reputation stand tall among others. Research Grants

Training Hub for Renewable Energy Technologies in Sri Lanka (ThreeLanka) Project

THREE LANKA project is an EU Erasmus + funded project worth of approximately 1 million Euros that addresses multiple key challenges for achieving renewable energy supply targets for Sri Lanka. The project runs for three years from 2021. The Faculty of Engineering of SLIIT is a partner of the project and holds a share of approximately 100,000 Euros. Dr. Nimsiri Abhayasinghe, Dr. Sujeewa Hettiwatte, Dr. Anton Hettiarachchige-Don and Ms. Hasini de Silva are contributors from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Internal funding

The department was able to secure several SLIIT research grants worth of LKR 400,000 each. In the year 2021, Dr. Lakmini Malasinghe was able to secure a grant for the research “Contactless Heart Rate and Heart Rate Variability monitoring using feature extraction”. In 2022, Dr. Sujeewa Hettiwatte was able to secure another grant for the research “Sky Imager for Short Term Solar Forecasting”.

AHEAD world bank project

As a co-investigator for an AHEAD world bank project, Dr. Lasantha Seneviratne was able to secure LKR 400,000 worth of funding for the research “Development of a Culturally Sensitive Autism Assessment Tool (towards detecting repetitive behaviors of children)”.

Collaboration with third party organisations

The department is continuously working closely with the industry to enrich the curriculum and the student experience. EEE department has few industry collaborations: Dialog-SLIIT 5G Innovation Centre with Dialog Axiata, partnerships with Sri Lanka Army, ACL Cables, Lalan Rubber and MAS to name few. In addition, the department always encourage students to grab industry project as their final year project.
