Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)
(Mechanical Engineering)

Mechanical engineers analyse and develop technical systems that involve motion. They help society to harness the energy and forces that exist in nature. The conception, design, manufacturing, maintenance and management of systems, ranging from micromechanical devices through to massive power generating turbines, are all within the scope of mechanical engineering.

Modern air and ground transport systems, and thermal power generation are a few key examples of mechanical engineering accomplishments.

Entry Criteria

Eligibility for the programme is as follows:

  • GCE Advanced Level (local): Minimum of 2 “C” passes and 1 “S” pass in the Physical Science Stream (Combined Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry) in one and the same sitting, with a "C" pass for Mathematics OR Physics). OR GCE Advanced Level (Cambridge or Edexcel): Minimum of 2 “C” passes and 1 “D” pass in one and the same sitting, with a "C" pass in Mathematics OR Physics
  • A pass in the Aptitude Test conducted by SLIIT.

Students may also apply with pending Advance Level Results.

  • Mechanical engineers analyse and develop technological systems that involve motion. They help society to harness the energy and forces that exist in nature.
  • The conception, design, manufacturing, maintenance and management of systems are all within the scope of mechanical engineering. These systems include micromechanical devices, power-generating turbines, air and transport systems, and thermal power generation.
  • Mechanical engineering is an engineering discipline that is understood and recognised all around the world. It is also one of the broadest engineering disciplines, meaning that as a graduate of this course you will have developed versatile skills that will suit many areas of employment.
  • This course is oriented to provide learning and skills development opportunities with hands-on experience. You will learn how to apply your knowledge and skills to invent or develop solutions to a range of exciting and challenging problems in industry.
  • In particular, you will appreciate applying the multidisciplinary problem-solving skills of a mechanical engineer across a wide spectrum of science and engineering endeavours that extend all the way to biomedical engineering.
  • In your final year you will undertake an individual design or research project.
  • The course is highly directed towards developing fundamental knowledge and a generic skills-base necessary for a wide range of career opportunities in the engineering industry, management, and research and development.
  • It has a well-maintained balance between theoretical skills and practical experience with up-to-date facilities for demonstrating concepts and their applications.
  • Instruction is by highly qualified, enthusiastic and caring teaching staff with both international academic experience and industry exposure.
  • A sound working knowledge of the fundamental principles that underpin Mechanical Engineering
  • Specialised knowledge and skills in a chosen area of Mechanical Engineering
  • Ability to apply knowledge using a realistic and practical approach to problem-solving and design
  • Ability to think both creatively and analytically
  • Skills to learn both independently and as part of a group through a variety of different methods
  • Self-discipline, self-management skills, personal responsibility and the ability to set goals for themselves
  • Confidence and possessing the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of both engineering and non-engineering personnel
  • The ability to work effectively in teams with an international and cross-cultural perspective
  • The platform and width of knowledge from which to continuously develop their potential as a professional engineer contributing positively to the community at large
