Liverpool John Moores University

In 1823 a small institution was founded that was to revolutionise education in Liverpool and provide opportunities for the working people of the city.

The Liverpool Mechanics Institute was founded by people of power and influence who recognised the transformative effects of education and the impact that learning and aspiration could have on individuals, communities and society. It was the first such institution to be founded in England. This small, pioneering movement was followed by the establishment of the Liverpool Institute and School of Art and the Liverpool Nautical College, and in 1900 Irene Mabel Marsh opened the IM Marsh campus. These organisations together laid the foundations for Liverpool John Moores University, an institution that has grown and flourished and continues to provide opportunities for all.

History

We can trace our roots back to the Industrial Revolution. In 1992, we became one of the UK’s new universities, taking our name from one of Liverpool’s great entrepreneurs and philanthropists, Sir John Moores. Our current incarnation as a modern civic university demonstrates that we haven’t lost the pioneering zeal of our founding fathers and like them, we still believe that ‘knowledge is power.

The most remarkable feature of our history is the coming together of a wide collection of institutions and their associated academic subjects. Today, we are Educate North’s 2017 University of the Year and our strategic plan outlines our ambitious plans for the future.

Watch this animation and take a trip back through time to find out more about our fascinating story.

It is an ethos we characterise in the simple words – dream, plan, achieve – from a statement made by our namesake Sir John Moores, the founder of the Littlewoods empire and a beacon of equal opportunities in Liverpool, “…if you want to enough, you can achieve anything”. Today, with a vibrant community of 25,000 students from over 100 countries world-wide, 2,500 staff and 250 degree courses, Liverpool John Moores University is one of the largest, most dynamic and forward-thinking universities in the UK.
