Algoma University is located in the heart of the Great Lakes in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. With 1,400 students, we are the smallest university in Ontario and the only post-secondary institution in the province strictly for undergraduate students.
Established in 1965 as Algoma University College, an affiliate of Laurentian University, we have been educating the people of Northern Ontario for over 50 years. In 2008, we were granted our charter, becoming an independent degree-granting institution.

Established in 1965, Algoma University has undergone many changes since the early days when the then Algoma College first began offering courses out of a few portables on the campus of what is now Sault College.
Initially an affiliate of Laurentian University in Sudbury, Algoma College began offering classes in 1967, and seized an opportunity for growth by moving into the former Shingwauk Residential School building in 1971, one year after the residential school closed its doors. Algoma College became Algoma University College, still affiliated with Laurentian, with the mandate to offer university programming to residents of Sault Ste. Marie and the surrounding area. Many programs required students to take the final year in Sudbury on the Laurentian campus, but over time program offerings and courses grew until many students were able to complete their degrees in Sault Ste. Marie.
Algoma University is located in Northern Ontario in the heart of Sault Ste. Marie (pronounced “Soo Saint Marie”), a city of 75,000 people. “The Soo”, as we locals call it, has all the amenities of a big city – shopping, entertainment, sports teams, festivals, and cultural activities – but without any of the hassle.
Sault Ste. Marie, a “Naturally Gifted” city, runs parallel to St. Mary’s River, the connector to Lake Superior and Lake Huron. A popular tourism destination due to its proximity to the United States of America and the changing of the seasons, there’s always something to do in the Sault. With four distinct seasons, students can take part in hiking and biking, but also skiing and snowboarding. With access to Lake Superior and a true Canadian winter, Algoma U students have the opportunity to experience what it really means to be a Canadian! From lounging on a beach, to building a snowman, students can take full advantage of the changing seasons and temperatures by taking part in seasonal activities. Did you know the Sault Ste. Marie is home to Canada’s second largest winter carnival? Bon Soo is a winter extravaganza that happens down the street from the Algoma U campus and features music, great food, sleigh rides and bum slides, and even the popular polar bear swim!
