
The inaugural “SLIIT Dozens’ Rugby Tournament 2024,” organized by the SLIIT Rugby team in collaboration with the Physical Education and SLIIT Sports Council, took place at the SLIIT grounds in Malabe on the 30th and 31st of July 2024. This landmark event saw ten highly competitive universities and higher educational institutes vying for the championship in this historic 12-a-side rugby tournament, the first of its kind among non-state universities.
In an exhilarating final match, the SLIIT Rugby Team emerged as champions, defeating General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), who secured the 1st runners-up position. The 2nd runners-up match was fiercely contested between the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT) and the Asia Pacific Institute of Information and Technology (APIIT), with IIT claiming the 2nd runners-up spot.
Individual awards were also presented based on player performance. The Best Player of the Tournament award goes to Osada Lakshan from SLIIT , while the Best Scorer of the Tournament award was claimed by Hansaka Hikgoda from KDU.
The tournament was graced by the presence of Group Captain Mr. Nalin de Silva, the newly elected President of Sri Lanka Rugby, as the chief guest. Honourary members included Shamrath Fernando, Tournament Director of Sri Lanka Rugby, and Prof. Samantha Thelijjagoda, Pro Vice-Chancellor (SLIIT Research and International) and Chairman of the Sports Advisory Board. The closing ceremony was attended by SLIIT Academic and Administrative staff members, marking a memorable conclusion to this groundbreaking event.
